January 8, 2020 – Dr. Amanda Giordano

Date: Wednesday, January 8, 2020

Time: 12:15-1:15

Location: Tate 473

The speaker for the January meeting will be Dr. Amanda Giordano, UGA assistant professor in the Department of Counseling and Human Services in the College of Education.  Her topic will be “Understanding Systemic Privilege and Oppression… And Why It Matters”. Abstract below.

Abstract:  Privilege and oppression are important topics in our national dialogue. Many individuals want to understand how our system is broken and what can be done to fix it. The aim of this presentation is to describe the basics of systemic privilege and oppression and how these issues intersect with Christianity. Specifically, we will examine the nature of cultural injustice, explore the experience of oppressed group members, and discuss manifestations of systemic oppression in various social outlets (e.g., media, employment, education, and criminal justice system). We will then discuss ways to advocate for oppressed groups and how Christians can work to combat systemic injustice.

We will provide a light complimentary lunch to everyone who sends in their RSVP by Tuesday, Jan. 7, by 5 pm. You can RSVP by filling out the form below.
