Location: Zoom ONLY – In light of the restrictions that are placed on the number of people who can be in a room safely, the challenges of providing prepackaged meals, and concern and care for one another in the Covid-19 environment we are living in, we’ve decided to hold our monthly meetings via zoom. Thankfully we are anticipating being able to meet in person again in the fall.
The speaker for our April 2021 meeting will be Dr. David Sabatini from the University of Oklahoma. His topic will be Environmental Ethics and the Bible (abstract below).
Dr. Sabatini is the David Ross Boyd Professor and Sun Oil Company Endowed Chair of Civil Engineering and Environmental Science at the University of Oklahoma. He joined OU in 1989 and is currently Director of the Water Technologies for Emerging Regions (WaTER) Center and Associate Director of the Institute for Applied Surfactant Research. His research focuses on sustainable drinking water systems for developing countries, surfactant-based environmental and biofuel technologies, and understanding / characterizing contaminant transport and remediation in the subsurface. He received his BSCE from the University of Illinois, his MSCE from Memphis State University and his PhD from Iowa State University.
Abstract: While one can point to numerous Biblical teachings that promote an environmental ethic, others point to Biblical texts that they say reflect arrogance towards the environment. In this presentation I will present both perspectives and share why I believe that the preponderance of the evidence points to a strong Biblical basis for environmental ethics. I will also share how my faith has shaped my university teaching and research as an environmental engineering professor.
