Date: Wednesday, January 14, 2026
Time: 12:30-1:30
Location: Tate 480
The first Christian Faculty Forum meeting of spring semester will be held on Wednesday, January 14th, from 12:30 to 1:30 in Tate 480 (note: this is just down the hall from our normal meeting room). Our speaker will be Justice Harold Melton. He served for 16 years as a justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia and resigned as chief justice in 2021 following his appointment in 2018. Prior to leading Georgia’s judicial branch, Justice Melton served as executive counsel to Governor Sonny Perdue and as an assistant attorney general in the office of the attorney general in the Georgia Department of Law where he also led the Consumer Protection Section for four years. He currently works as a partner at the law firm Troutman Pepper Locke. His talk is entitled, “Justice and Compassion: How Do the Two Coexist?”
Abstract: Judges are called to be impartial and judge according to the law. Emotions, feelings, etc. about a topic are not supposed to play a role in doing justice according to the law. Yet as a Christian, compassion for people (the poor, the immigrant, the marginalized, etc.) also comes into play. How do you juggle the two callings (justice and compassion) as a Christian judge? This talk is one judge’s approach to how he sought to be faithful to both.
A light lunch will be provided to everyone who sends in their RSVP by 5 pm, Tuesday, January 13th, by filling out the form below. If you plan to attend but don’t need a lunch provided, please RSVP and indicate that as well.
