January 14, 2015: Dr. Russ Carlson

Date: January 14

Time: 12:15-1:15 pm

Location: Tate Reception Hall

Speaker: Dr. Russ Carlson, UGA Emeritus Prof in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Topic: Living Out Your Faith in the Academy

Russ was Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BCMB) and Executive Technical Director of Analytical Services at the Complex Carbohydrate Research Center (CCRC) at the University of Georgia from 1988 until his recent retirement.  He is now Emeritus Professor in BCMB and at the CCRC.  During his tenure at UGA, Dr. Carlson taught undergraduate biochemistry for many years, and his research was directed toward understanding the interaction between microbes and their host cells.  His research, which has been supported over the years by the NIH, NSF, USDA, DOE and CDC, has resulted in more that 180 peer-reviewed publications and four patents.

Dr. Carlson has been active in the Christian Faculty Forum at UGA for many years and was also the recipient of the 2013 Erick B. Nilson award which Faculty Commons gives annually to an outstanding Christian Professor.
Russ will tell his story of praying nearly 20 years ago for ways to be more proactive in sharing his faith as a university professor and how God answered that prayer. He’ll share how the CFF had a role in providing both encouragement and tools to express his faith more actively. He’ll also tell some of his own personal faith journey and how the things he learned in science deepened his faith in Christ. In addition he will share how he interacted with students in his home about faith and science.

A light lunch will be served to those who RSVP by Tuesday, Jan. 13, at 5 pm:
